Reflections on Lough Neagh

Motor boating on and around Lough Neagh can be great fun, exhilarating and often challenging. From small open boats with proportionally small outboards to larger cruisers, Antrim Boat Club caters for all these vessels and your boating needs.

Leaving your mooring on the Six Mile Water and heading out onto the Lough past the clubhouse, opens up a huge variety of possibilities for all motor boaters. From a wee run about Antrim Bay past the Firing Head towards Shanes Castle, to heading further afield to the likes of Ballyronan, The Battery Harbour, Kinnego Marina, Rams Island or Coney Island for a BBQ and leisurely drinks with friends and family, or for an extended overnight stay, making use of the varying facilities provided at these locations.

Navigating west from Antrim Boat Club through Toome Bay brings you to the first of six locks along the mighty River Bann. As you travel north via places such as Newferry, Lough Beg, Portglenone, and Coleraine and then onward to where the river meets the sea at The Barmouth between Castlerock and Portstewart Strand beaches. Leaving The Barmouth, you can head to Rathlin Island for a short or long stay, and even strike out for Scotland for the more adventurous and brave at heart.

An option would be to simply sit out in the bay off Portstewart and Portrush and catch some mackerel for your supper, then back through the locks arriving safely back home on the Six Mile Water.

There are various charts and guides to help you plan your passage and willing members who can pass on their knowledge and experience, usually over a pint in the clubhouse.
